How Athletes Benefit from Organ and Tissue Donation

Tissue donation is especially important in sports medicine. If you’ve ever known someone who had ACL repair or reconstructive surgery after an injury, they likely benefited from donated tissue. Common procedures using tissue donation include:

  • ACL repair and reconstruction
  • Multi-ligament repair
  • Lateral ankle reconstruction
  • Meniscus transplant

These procedures often use allograft tissue, which is tissue that comes from a donor. It eliminates the need for a second surgical site and offers a faster recovery. Compared to autograft tissue, which is taken from the patient’s own body, allografts are often less invasive and more efficient.

One tissue donor can heal an average of 75 people, with the potential of 125.
